FY 2014 County Budget
The FY 2014 County budget was given second reading on 10 June with the condition that the Finance Committee give further consideration to certain specific matters including the 5 times increase in the "Plan Review Fee," postponing the hiring of the Transportation Planner, hiring four more Sheriff's deputies. The Finance Committee meeting has not yet been scheduled. The Budget will be up for third reading at the 24 June 2013 County Council meeting.
Corridor Study Meeting
The Planning Department has been asked by County Council to develop an overlay zoning plan for the Rte. 521/Rte160 Corridor between the Waxhaw Road (Rte 75) intersection with Rte 521 and the state line to the north and the county line to the west. There will be an open house from 6 PM to 8 PM on Friday 14 June at the Indian Land Library to allow the public an opportunity to offer comments on the situation before detailed planning begins. Brian Jenest, the consultant for the project and members of the Planning Department staff will be present to record observations and answer questions. The meeting will be in drop in format; staff will be present from 6 - 8 PM and citizens are welcome to drop in any time during that interval, look at the exhibits, ask questions, make observations, etc. and leave when they are finished. No formal presentations are planned.

Treetops
The 622 acre Treetops site at 9070 Van Wyck Road has been placed under contract to a developer who plans to build 1000 - 1500 residences on the site as a cluster development. In a cluster development all the residences are built on very small lots on the buildable portion of the land while the rest of the land is left largely undeveloped. The difficulty with this is that it allows the development at very high density of sites with a large amount of unbuildable land - swamps, floodplains, etc.  Further concerns with the Treetops proposal is that Van Wyck Road is not capable of absorbing the traffic from such a development and the schools are not able to absorb the additional students that will be generated by such a large development.
The Planning Commission will consider a cluster development ordinance at their regular meeting on Tuesday 18 June at 6:30 PM and the  Treetops application at their meeting on 20 August.
Treetops Local Meetings
Mr. Brian Jenest, the land use planner advising the County on the Cluster Development Ordinance and also representing the builder who intends to build on the Treetops site, will be available at 4:00 PM on Friday 14 June 2013 at the Indian Land Library to discuss the proposed Cluster Development ordinance and its application to the Treetops site.

Feeding the Hungry
Donations to Lancaster County food programs have fallen off recently. The recession increases the number of people facing hunger and the need for food.  The Van Wyck Press is happy to transport food to the agencies serving the needy in Lancaster.  If you have food that you would like to donate and would like us to transport it for you, let me know.
