TreetopsThe Lennar Treetops Cluster Development will come before County Council for third reading and a public hearing on Monday 8 December 2014 at 6:30 PM in the County Administration Building, 101 N. Main St., Lancaster.
Reece Murphy has prepared an article which was published in the Carolina Gateway on Wednesday 3 December. This article details the vision behind the Treetops Camp and the history of the successful implementation of that vision, then the deliberate betrayal of that vision and the destruction of much of the value of the Treetops Camp by Thompson Child and Family Focus on obtaining title to the property. Those who believe that business should be supported by morality will find little positive news in this article or in County Council's support for the Mattamy and Lennar Treetops Developments. There is no question that it is within the authority of the County to continue Treetops as a camp in accordance with the original vision of Mr. Wikoff, but the County has consistently followed the money rather than the ideals.
The Community Development Club considered the situation at its meeting on 2 December and approved this document supporting community protests at the 8 December 2014 County Council meeting.
The Van Wyck Community has consistently held to the position that Cluster Developments have no place in Van Wyck and that the Treetops property should remain a camp operated in accordance with the clearly expressed wishes of the donor of the land, Mr. Fred Wikoff. Van Wyck does not have and the County has no plans to provide the infrastructure required to support cluster developments in Van Wyck. Operation of the Treetops Camp in accordance with the wishes of Mr. Wikoff would impose no infrastructure demands on the community and would provide, as it has in the past, a valuable focal point for service to the less fortunate for the Van Wyck Community in addition to a valuable community asset.
